Chalky, Faded Vinyl Siding
Run a finger down your siding. If it comes away chalky white, you are not looking at dirt — you are looking at the surface of the vinyl itself breaking down.
What oxidation actually is
Vinyl siding is protected by UV stabilizers built into the material. Florida sun consumes them faster than almost anywhere in the country, and once they are depleted the surface layer of the vinyl begins to degrade.
That degraded layer is the chalk. It sits on top as a fine powder, dulls the colour, and washes down the wall in streaks every time it rains.
It shows first and worst on south and west elevations, which take the most direct afternoon sun. North walls on the same house can still look nearly new.
Oxidation versus dirt versus mildew
Dirt rinses off with water and leaves nothing on your hand.
Mildew looks grey-black, concentrates in shade and along the lower courses, and comes off with a cleaning solution.
Oxidation is white or chalky, is worst in full sun, and leaves powder on your finger. It is the one that does not simply wash away, because it is the material itself rather than something sitting on it.
Most tired-looking Florida siding is a combination of all three, which is why a single rinse never restores it.
What cleaning can and cannot do
A proper wash removes the chalk layer, the mildew and the dirt. That alone usually recovers a great deal of the original colour and is what most homeowners are actually after.
What it cannot do is replace the UV stabilizers. The vinyl underneath has aged, and once cleaned it will begin oxidizing again — more slowly at first, then at its previous rate.
If the siding has gone genuinely faded rather than just chalky, cleaning will improve it but not return it to new. At that point the honest options are painting with a vinyl-safe coating or replacement, and we will tell you if that is where you are.
How we handle it
Soft washing, with a solution chosen to lift oxidation as well as organic growth, applied to the full elevation so the wall recovers evenly.
Even application matters more here than anywhere else on the house. Spot-treating oxidized vinyl produces a visibly patchy wall, because you are removing a surface layer rather than a stain.
We never pressure wash vinyl. Beyond the risk of forcing water up under the laps into the wall cavity, high pressure accelerates the very surface breakdown you are trying to reverse.
