White Chalky Haze on Pavers and Brick
A white, chalky haze on pavers or brick is not something that landed on them. It is coming out of them — mineral salts carried to the surface from within — which is why washing it off achieves so little.
What efflorescence is
Concrete pavers, brick and mortar all contain soluble mineral salts left over from manufacture. Moisture moving through the material dissolves those salts and carries them to the surface, where the water evaporates and leaves the salt behind as a white crystalline bloom.
It is most common on new installations — typically appearing in the first six to eighteen months as the material cures and sheds its residual salts. Installers often call this new-paver bloom, and it is normal.
It also appears on older hardscape wherever moisture is moving through, which can indicate drainage sitting under the surface.
Why it looks worse some days than others
Efflorescence is water-soluble. After rain it dissolves and largely disappears, then reappears as the surface dries — which is why homeowners often think it has gone and then find it back a week later.
It typically shows worst in cooler, drier conditions when evaporation happens at the surface rather than the salts being washed away.
This on-and-off behaviour is the clearest way to tell efflorescence from ordinary staining. Anything that vanishes in the rain and returns as it dries is efflorescence.
What not to do
Do not seal over it. The single most expensive mistake here. Sealing traps the salts under the sealer, where they show as a permanent milky haze — and now the only way to address it is stripping the sealer off first.
Do not scrub it with water. Water dissolves the salt and carries some of it back into the paver, where it will resurface. It feels like progress and mostly is not.
Do not use strong acid without knowing your material. Acid removes efflorescence but can strip pigment from coloured pavers and burn the surface of coquina, leaving a bleached patch worse than the haze.
How it should be handled
Efflorescence is removed with a purpose-made cleaner that converts the salts so they can be rinsed away rather than redistributed, applied at a strength matched to the material and always tested on an inconspicuous area first.
On genuinely new installations the honest advice is often to wait. Most new-paver bloom resolves on its own within the first year or so as the residual salts work out, and treating it repeatedly during that period is money spent on a process that is completing anyway.
If sealing is the plan, this is the order that matters: let the bloom finish, clean it properly, let the surface dry fully, then seal. Sealing early is what produces a permanently hazy driveway.
