Black Tire Marks on a Driveway

The dark curved marks where you turn into the garage are not dirt, rubber dust, or oil. They are plasticizer — a chemical migrating out of your tires into the concrete — and they need their own treatment.

What tire marking actually is

Modern tires contain plasticizers and oils that keep the rubber flexible. Heat and pressure drive those compounds out of the tread and into whatever the tire is sitting on.

On a hot Florida driveway — and surface temperatures on unshaded concrete get very high — that transfer accelerates sharply. The compound soaks into the concrete pore structure exactly like oil does.

The characteristic pattern is a dark arc where the wheel turns while the car is barely moving, because that is where heat and pressure are highest and the tire is scrubbing rather than rolling.

Why normal cleaning does not shift it

It is not a surface deposit, so pressure alone only cleans the concrete around it and makes the mark stand out more.

It is not grease either, so standard degreasers have limited effect — they are formulated for petroleum oils, and plasticizer is a different chemistry.

This is why tire marks routinely survive an otherwise successful driveway clean, and why homeowners conclude the concrete is permanently stained when usually it is not.

What not to do

Do not use a turbo nozzle on the mark. The commonest mistake. It will not remove the plasticizer and it leaves permanent spiral etching that traps dirt worse than the mark did.

Do not use solvents like acetone or petrol. They can soften and spread the compound deeper into the slab, and they are a fire and runoff hazard on a driveway.

Do not assume it is permanent. Most tire marking responds well to the right treatment, even when it has been there for years.

How we treat it

A cleaner formulated for plasticizer and polymer transfer, applied directly to the marks with proper dwell time so it can break the bond and draw the compound back out of the pores.

The slab is then cleaned with a surface cleaner so the whole driveway finishes at an even tone. Treating the marks without cleaning the surrounding concrete just produces clean patches on a dirty drive.

Most marks lift substantially or completely. Very old marking on unsealed concrete in full sun can leave a faint shadow, and sealing afterwards prevents the next set soaking in.

Questions we get about this

Why didn't degreaser remove my tire marks?
Because degreasers target petroleum oils and tire marking is plasticizer — a different chemistry that has migrated out of the rubber into the concrete. It needs a cleaner formulated for polymer transfer.
Are tire marks permanent?
Usually not. Most respond well even after years. Very old marking on unsealed concrete in full sun sometimes leaves a faint shadow rather than clearing completely.
Will sealing the driveway prevent them?
Largely, yes. A sealed slab keeps the plasticizer on the surface rather than letting it soak into the pores, so the next marks clean off easily.
Why are the marks always in the same curved shape?
That is where you turn the wheel while barely moving. Heat and pressure peak there and the tire scrubs rather than rolls, so transfer is highest.
